Amino acids as building blocks of peptides and proteins are present in animals, humans and plants. The analysis of amino acids is of essential significance in several areas including food science, clinical diagnostic and pharmaceutical products research. The classical LC determination of amino acids is performed by the sample pretreatment including pre-column as well as post-column derivatization increasing or even enabling spectroscopic detection.

Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) is a brominated flame retardant that is banned in various regions due to concerns about its environmental effects. Researchers from the Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry (Chinese Academy of Sciences) used HPLC and GC-IRMS to examine the carbon isotope ratio of HBCD, which is useful for determining the sources of this compound.

Homologous series of alkyl esters of phosphorus‐containing acids, namely, dialkyl phosphonates and trialkyl phosphites, have been characterized by EI mass spectra and gas chromatographic retention indices on semi‐standard non‐polar stationary phases.

For some time “sustainable processes” has been the phrase on everyone’s lips. As far as analytical labs are concerned there are many possibilities for saving energy or rather for using resources more efficiently. Besides the real “energy guzzlers” such as extractors and safety cabinets, complex analysis apparatus has to be subjected to critical system checks, too.

Selected key technologies of the analytical science industry are discussed by Steve Down with reference to burgeoning application areas and the scope for future improvements.

Ion source pressure plays a significant role in the process of ionization and the subsequent ion transmission inside a mass spectrometer. Pressurizing the ion source to a gas pressure greater than atmospheric pressure is a relatively new approach that aims to further improve the performance of atmospheric pressure ionization sources. A brief review on the development of super-atmospheric pressure ion sources, including high-pressure electrospray, field desorption and superheated ESI, and the strategies to...
