QuEChERS 101: The Basics and Beyond

Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged & Safe

In this webinar, we discuss in detail the QuEChERS extraction procedure from the point of product arrival through extraction, dispersive SPE and on to analysis.

Factors that affect recovery and increase throughput re presented in addition to future applications for QuEChERS, reaching far beyond pesticides in food products.

What you will learn:

  • New users will gain a basic understanding of the QuEChERS method and its benefits.
  • Experienced users will learn about new advances and optimization of the QuEChERS methodology.
  • Discover the unique feature and advantages of the Agilent QuEChERS kits.

More information

QuEChERS is a sample preparation technique that came to fruition in 2003, based on the efforts of scientists from USDA and EU food regulatory agencies.

Their primary goal was to develop a single method for the analysis of multi-classes of pesticides in food products; since at the time the primary sample preparation technique involved multiple Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) methods.

QuEChERS is as easy as 1-2-3.

  1. Extraction of compounds from product with excess salts.
  2. Dispersive SPE of the extract to remove interfering matrix effects.
  3. Analysis by either GC or LC and MS.

Dr Joan Stevens: Biography

Joan (Joni) earned a Bachelors of Arts in Chemistry from the College of Wooster, a Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry from The Ohio State University, College of Pharmacy and conducted postdoctoral research at Purdue University.

Joni joined Agilent as an SPE Applications Scientist in the Columns and Supplies Division (CSD) on April 1, 2009. Prior to joining Agilent, Joni was associated with Gilson, Inc. where she worked from 1989 to 2009 in Technical Sales, Technical Support, as well as a Technical Support Manager and an Applications Manager.

During her 19+ years, Joni has worked closely with customers, sales and technical support personnel, as well as state, federal and local government agencies on various projects. She was directly involved with instrument installations, training, support and applications development in sample preparation (solid phase extraction), GPC and HPLC (analytical and preparative). She was directly responsible for the work and applications that were presented at technical conferences in US, Canada and Europe.

Several applications were also published in the area of sample preparation and chromatographic method development. Joni's goals are to involve researchers actively in sample preparation, eliciting an understanding, proof of concepts including method development profiles.
Mr David Jones: Biography

David received his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and his Master of Science in Analytical Chemistry, both from Brigham Young University.

In 1999, David began working for Varian Inc., which would eventually become part of Agilent Technologies Inc., as a technical support chemist. In 2000, he moved to R&D where he was responsible for the development of several new products ranging from solid phase extraction, liquid/liquid extraction, and filtration to LC columns.

David holds multiple patents and in 2008 was awarded Varian's Innovator of the Year Award. Also in 2008, he completed a Masters in Business Administration from Pepperdine University and transitioned into product management.

David has 5 children, and a wife of 15 years. He enjoys hiking, biking and camping with his family, and spends any left over time cooking and eating!
