Developments in Analysis of Drugs and Metabolites in Skeletal Remains

Bone remains are one of the least characterized and most challenging matrices for forensic toxicological analysis. Before the forensic utility of the matrix may be fully realized, controlled experiments must be carried out. This presentation will highlight the value that UPLC-based approaches have brought to the drug analysis of bone samples. In addition, we will discuss the most recent findings in analytical developments using UPLC-QTof mass spectrometry, including: dramatic enhancements in sensitivity,...

Peptide Hormones in Sports Drug Testing: Detection of Emerging Protein/Peptide Based Drugs by Means of LC-MS

Therapeutic proteins and peptides have emerged as one of the most important classes of new pharmaceuticals. Several drug candidates with potential performance-enhancing properties are currently in preclinical or clinical development. The current version of the WADA Prohibited List includes a variety of protein/peptide-based doping agents, some of which can be detected in biological samples by using immunological and mass spectrometry-based approaches.

A simple, rapid and cost-effective HPLC protocol is described for the rapid analysis of a wide range of chlorophylls, carotenoids and tocopherols in leaves that contribute to changes in leaf optical properties.

Austrian scientists used anion-exchange and size-exclusion chromatography to recover a guanosine molecule that they synthesized via a new one-pot multienzyme cascade route.

Scientists in the US have designed a pressurized liquid extraction protocol for recovering cholesterol from modern and ancient bones, prior to analysis by gas chromatography and isotope ratio mass spectrometry.

Selected key technologies of the analytical science industry are discussed by Steve Down with reference to burgeoning application areas and the scope for future improvements.

Ion source pressure plays a significant role in the process of ionization and the subsequent ion transmission inside a mass spectrometer. Pressurizing the ion source to a gas pressure greater than atmospheric pressure is a relatively new approach that aims to further improve the performance of atmospheric pressure ionization sources. A brief review on the development of super-atmospheric pressure ion sources, including high-pressure electrospray, field desorption and superheated ESI, and the strategies to...

In the current context of international conflicts and localized terrorist actions, there is unfortunately a permanent threat of attacks with unconventional warfare agents. Among these, biological agents such as toxins, microorganisms, and viruses deserve particular attention owing to their ease of production and dissemination. Mass spectrometry-based techniques for the detection and quantification of biological agents have a decisive role to play for countermeasures in a scenario of biological attacks.
