Techniques and Tools for Trace Metals and Nutritional Food Analysis

With global concerns about food quality and food safety continuing to garner attention, it is important for both manufacturers and regulatory bodies to have robust analytical instrumentation and methods to ensure accurate and precise results. For the measurement of inorganic elements and nutrients, sample preparation can be of critical importance to the quality of the analysis. Here we discuss the process of sample preparation and analysis, tools and techniques for the measurement of inorganic elements in...

In the U.S., compliance monitoring of inorganic anions in drinking water and wastewater has been required since 1992. This application note demonstrates fast analysis of environmental water samples containing anions at ppm concentrations using the high resolution capabilities of the Thermo Scientific™ Dionex™ IonPac™ AS18-4μm column facilitated by the high-pressure capabilities of the Thermo Scientific™ Dionex™ Integrion™ HPIC™ system.

thumbnail image: The rise and rise of bioactive proteins

Recent advances in mass spectrometry have led to a surge in the search for so-called ‘bioactive proteins’: small proteins that can improve health. A surprising and underused source of these proteins is blood from meat production, of which 70% is currently wasted. This study found over 900 different peptides in just one sample.

Mining for the metals inside plants

As well as oxygen and water, plants also need metals to survive. Detecting these metals is a major challenge in the plant sciences, and no technique has so far been able to profile all the metals inside a plant. A study in New Phytologist describes a revolutionary new method that was able to detect a wide range of metals – including iron, copper, zinc and nickel – inside the pea plant.

Hydroperoxides, reactive chemicals responsible for allergic reactions, are notoriously difficult to quantify due to a lack of standards. A study published in Flavour and Fragrance Journal however describes a new approach which overcomes the lack of commercially available standards and could improve quality control for a wide range of products, from perfumes to laundry detergents.

We are proud to announce a new series of educational webinars run in collaboration with Chromedia, COAST, and SciMind, a product of the American Chemical Society. These webinars will build into a must-have set of tutorial materials for the analytical scientist.

This glossary of chemometrics terms is provided with the permission of Bryan Prazen of the Synovec Group, Department of Chemistry, University of Washington.

While even the best analytical techniques cannot rectify problems generated by sloppy sample preparation, this less "sexy" step between the point at which analytes are transferred from the sample matrix to a form suitable for analysis is often overlooked. Read a free chapter from "Sample Preparation Techniques in Analytical Chemistry " here.
