Engineered serendipity

Serendipity or ‘accidental discovery’ is the absolute epitome of innovation. Vaccination, penicillin and Viagra are some famous examples of serendipitous discoveries, but did you know that the splitless injection technique, stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) and selected ion flow tube MS (SIFT-MS) were also discovered by clever accident? The webinar will provide basic insights into the process of innovation and how to implement it successfully using principles and tools from Lean thinking.

The extent of tobacco use in a particular region can be estimated from the levels of its metabolites in sewage using LC/MS, say Spanish scientists, who improved method accuracy by including the deconjugated metabolites in their assessments.

Exposure to lead acetate on the skin results in oxidation of protein in the liver that could ultimately cause liver damage, say Taiwanese researchers.

This review summarizes obstacles and achievements in protein sample preparation from urine for proteome analysis using mass spectrometry, with special emphasis on the discovery of novel cancer biomarkers.

We are proud to announce a new series of educational webinars run in collaboration with Chromedia, COAST, and SciMind, a product of the American Chemical Society. These webinars will build into a must-have set of tutorial materials for the analytical scientist.

This glossary of chemometrics terms is provided with the permission of Bryan Prazen of the Synovec Group, Department of Chemistry, University of Washington.

While even the best analytical techniques cannot rectify problems generated by sloppy sample preparation, this less "sexy" step between the point at which analytes are transferred from the sample matrix to a form suitable for analysis is often overlooked.
