Modern analytical techniques enable information to be recovered about the diseases contracted by historical figures. A multi-centre scientific team sampled the original manuscript of Casanova’s ‘Memoirs’, extracting proteins, hydrolysing them and examining the resulting peptides by LC-MS, looking for any evidence of gonorrhoea bacteria or other harmful micro-organisms.

Close examination of the immune cells of sea urchins living near carbon dioxide vents in their natural aquatic environment suggests that they will be able to adapt to life in the oceans as acidification increases due to anthropogenic impact.

The development of CE‐MS over the last 20 years has been reviewed by focusing on the clinical potential of proteome and peptidome analysis and highlighting some of the key technical issues and advancements that have been made towards implementation.
