LC-MS/MS shines light on sunscreen UV filters

Date: Mar 1, 2017

Author: Ryan De Vooght-Johnson

The detection of UV filters, used in sunscreens and other cosmetics, is a topic of interest for analysts working on their possible health effects, for those concerned with consumer protection and also for environmental scientists, since these products can have adverse environmental consequences, such as damaging coral. Scientists in Beijing have developed an improved method for detecting a range of different UV filters using LC-MS/MS.

Gender Bender Steroids in the Alabama Mud Detected by UHPLC

Date: Feb 15, 2017

Author: Ryan De Vooght-Johnson

Steroid pollutants tend to pass through sewage works and accumulate in estuaries, where they act as endocrine disruptors and may harm wildlife. Scientists from Auburn University, Alabama have developed a new UHPLC-MS/MS method for the detection of these steroids from estuarine sediments.

LC-MS shows e-cigarette packs lack accuracy

Date: Feb 1, 2017

Author: Ryan De Vooght-Johnson

E-cigarettes are increasing in popularity, but there is a lack of good research into their content and effects. Italian researchers examined the liquid and vapour from a variety of e-cigarettes by LC-MS/MS, finding that many gave inaccurate nicotine contents on their labels, and that they often contained significant amounts of various nicotine analogues, possibly exposing users to unknown risks.

Chemical profiling of cocaine: a powerful tool for drug enforcement

Date: Jan 12, 2017

Author: Ryan De Vooght-Johnson

Chemical profiling of cocaine has been performed for the first time in China, successfully separating over 180 different samples into seven main groups of possible similar origin. The study, which used a form of ultra-high performance liquid chromatography suitable for routine analysis, provides intelligence for cracking down on drug trade in the country.

Controversial caffeine caught by clever LC-MS/MS method

Date: Jan 1, 2017

Author: Ryan De Vooght-Johnson

Most of us like the odd cup of tea or coffee, but a very high caffeine intake from oral sprays, e-cigarettes or powdered caffeine can have serious health consequences, particularly when combined with high alcohol consumption. Researchers at the University of Tennessee have developed a novel method of simultaneously determining the concentrations of caffeine and its metabolites in plasma by LC-MS/MS with ESI-MS/MS.
