The Springer journal Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry (ABC) has given its Best Paper Award 2014 to Elise Dennis, a PhD candidate in analytical chemistry at Indiana University in Bloomington, US. Worth €1500, the award is designed to honor execeptional young scientists and stimulate their research careers.

The paper for which Wang received the award is entitled 'Zoom-TOFMS: addition of a constant-momentum-acceleration "zoom" mode to time-of-flight mass spectrometry'. As part of a team led by Gary Hieftje, professor of chemistry at Indiana University, Dennis helped to develop a novel form of time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS) that alternates between constant-momentum acceleration and conventional, constant-energy acceleration. This produces an improvement in mass resolution without a loss in instrument sensitivity.

'This is an excellent contribution to the further instrumental development of TOFMS where a new mass spectrometer concept was demonstrated,' said Klaus Heumann, editor of ABC. 'By combining two types of TOFMS, complete mass-spectral coverage and enhanced resolution is provided which makes this development a highlight in mass spectrometry.'
