The biopharmaceutical contract manufacturing sector will generate sales worth $2.8 billion this year and will grow at an annual rate of around 10% over the next five years, predicts a new report from HighTech Business Decisions.

According to 'Biopharmaceutical Contract Manufacturing 2014: Improving Markets, Services, and Technologies', many biopharmaceutical contract manufacturing organizations (CMOs) are responding to this growth by expanding production capacity. It also predicts that the demand for production services using mammalian cell culture technology will grow even faster than the sector as a whole.

'The pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies are increasing their spending for outsource biopharmaceutical manufacturing services,' says William Downey, president of HighTech Business Decisions. 'We see a trend towards greater use of CMOs by large pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, which is having a positive effect on this market.'
