The Scientist magazine has recently published an article entitled 'Bioinformatics Software: A Buyer's Guide', providing readers with advice on how to choose bioinformatics software that suits their 'omics analysis needs.

Written by David Smith, an assistant professor of biology at the University of Western Ontario, Canada, the article describes his experiences evaluating and purchasing several commercial bioinformatics packages. The article is adapted from a freely-avaiable review on bioinformatics software that Smith wrote for Briefings in Bioinformatics.
