Year of Education in Separation Science

Welcome to the
Year of Education in Separation Science!

Professor Harold McNair, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, USA
Professor Peter Schoenmakers, University of Amsterdam, Netherlands

The Year of Education in Separation Science

The Year of Education came about through discussions between 3 professors who actively teach chromatography:

  • Professor Harold McNair, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, USA
  • Professor Pat Sandra, University of Ghent, Belgium
  • Professor Peter Schoenmakers, University of Amsterdam, Netherlands

In this video, Professors McNair and Schoenmakers discuss the problems and potential solutions...

The Year of Education matters to all of us

"So we need a jump, instead of teaching twenty people, we need to teach hundreds of people. And lower the barriers: low cost and easy to do, online and interactive."

Why a "Year of Education" in separation science?

"We realised that people taking our courses or sending us emails, asking for help, had little to no background in chromatography... and therefore it became essential to start with the fundamentals: not only the theory, but also the practice, and to use some sort of unique, unbiased, interactive method of teaching all of those things."

Is chromatography that important?

"The standard of living of this world depends on separation science: the air we monitor, the water we drink, the food we eat... chromatography still stands out in my mind as the one of the essential safeguards of human life on this planet."

So what is the problem?

"The problem is growing. There is a gap between the number of measurements we need to do and the number of people that are qualified to perform such analyses. So we need to make people aware of the importance of good chromatography and good measurements, and boost the number of qualified people. We are convinced that books alone cannot solve the problem."

What will you do in the Year of Education?

"The first activity will be a free webinar on gas chromatography, followed by a number of other activities, more webinars, online short courses, tutorials, instruction videos and much more! 2010 will be a year full of activities. Many experts will be involved, from university and industry. We believe all chromatographers should actively take part in this: in teaching, telling their employees and students to take courses. This is a chance they should not miss!"

separationsNOW, a WIley-Blackwell company, and Chromedia have collaborated to support the Year of Education in Separation Science.

Both companies will play a central role in activities and promotion.
