Thursday 9 September 2010 Webinar #5 Sports Drug Testing: Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry-Based Approaches
In this fifth webinar of the Year of Education, Professor Mario Thevis will present on the fundamentals of sports drug testing.
A selection of compounds, new challenges, and methods currently employed in doping control laboratories will be presented to the audience including, for example: new anabolic agents referred to as selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs); insulins; so-called "releasing peptides" that stimulate the endogenous production of natural hormones; and ways of manipulating drug tests.
26 July 2010 Tutorial Competition - Win an iPad!
Do you have an existing tutorial that you would like to share with a worldwide community? Do you feel inspired to create a new tutorial?
The Year of Education in Separation Science has launched this competition to facilitate and encourage the creation and sharing of educational material from within our communities of readers.
The entrant judged to have produced the best tutorial will win an iPad!
01 June 2010 Free Chromedia Video Tutorial Multidimensional GC: An Opportunity in Food Analysis
Food analysis is increasingly requiring more and more details of the sample compounds, better separation, more peaks and better limits of detection.
The summer activity in the Year of Education is a free tutorial prepared by Peter Tranchida and Luigi Mondello of the University of Messina.
In this video, Peter Tranchida speaks about the cutting-edge developments in multi-dimensional GC and its applications in the analysis of foods.
The video is available for free for a limited time on Chromedia as a part of the Year of Education.
21 April 2010 Webinar #4: Introduction to Sample Preparation
Sample preparation is the most important, yet often most neglected area of chromatographic training and method development. The world's finest gas and liquid chromatographs generally cannot overcome mistakes made prior to sample injection.
This webinar focuses on general principles of sampling and sample preparation for chromatography and an overview of key concepts for several major sample preparation techniques, including: Liquid-liquid and liquid-solid extractions (LLE and LSE); Static headspace extraction (SHE); Solid phase extraction (SPE); Sorptive micro-extractions (SPME and SBSE).
Discussion is directed toward seeing the commonalities among all extraction techniques and toward choosing the best technique for a given analytical problem. Fundamentals of sample and glassware handling are also reviewed.
This webinar is directed toward analysts who use these techniques hands-on every day and to the laboratory managers who must teach, train and supervise them.
17 February 2010 Webinar #3: Liquid Chromatography Master Class: Introduction to LC & Resolution in LC

In this third webinar of the Year of Education, Dr Lee Polite (Axion Labs, Chicago, USA) and Professor Peter Schoenmakers (University of Amsterdam, Netherlands) re-visited the fundamentals of liquid chromatography by: answering your questions to the "Introduction to LC" webinar; explaining the concept of "resolution in LC" in more detail; answering more live questions from the audience.
This webinar is supported by Lee Polite's Resolution in LC video tutorial.
19 January 2010 Webinar #2: Introduction to Liquid Chromatography
We would again like to thank you for your enthusiastic response to our initiative. More than 700 people registered for Professor Schoenmakers' webinar in advance; this number is continuing to rise as the recorded on-demand version is played.
The webinar provides insight into the various LC techniques, including: an overall perspective of current usage and applications of the various techniques; a description of how the techniques developed, starting from paper chromatography up-to current "high tech" two-dimensional separations; a more detailed focus on the concept of various methods.

17 November 2009 Chromedia GC Video Course
Would you like to watch Professor Harold McNair while he is presenting? Or prefer to watch only one specific part of his tutorial and get direct links to other experts for more depth and detail?
We have recorded five 10 minute sessions on video, which make a full introductory course to gas chromatography: 1. Introduction; 2. Instrumentation; 3. Capillary columns; 4. Detectors; 5. Quantitative analysis.
To assist you to deepen your knowledge, we have added links that take you straight to the relevant in-depth treatment of the topics on Chromedia. Please note that the videos are only available to Chromedia subscribers. A free preview is available for those who have not yet subscribed to Chromedia.
11 November 2009 McNair Heads the Year of Education
separationsNOW and Chromedia are extremely proud to announce that the renowned Professor Harold McNair will be the chief editor for the Year of Education.
Professor McNair said: "Chromedia and separationsNOW have done a wonderful job in making this all happen. Now it is my pleasure to be your guide. I am extremely happy to notice that you share my interest and passion of chromatography and that you want to know more. There are numerous plans and suggestions, webinars, videos and more. And I have a great team of experts lined up!"
28 October 2009 Webinar #1: Introduction to GC
separationsNOW and Chromedia would like to thank you for your enthusiastic response to our first webinar "Introduction to Gas Chromatography".
So far, approximately1000 readers have registered!
If you haven't registered yet, it's not too late because the event was recorded and is now available on demand. In the webinar, you voted on whether you would like more webinars. The result was clear: "More, please!".
1 October 2009 Welcome to the Year of Education in Separation Science!
The Year of Education came about through discussions between 3 professors who actively teach chromatography.
The first activity in the Year of Education is a series of free educational webinars, run in conjunction by separationsNOW and Chromedia.
In the first webinar, Professor Harold McNair gave an interactive lecture on the basics of gas chromatography.
Coming soon is the second webinar "Introduction to HPLC!"
